Bedroom Furniture

When shopping for bedroom furniture first you will want to decide on the type of furniture that will suit your needs. Look through magazines and catalogues for the type and style you prefer. Once deciding on a style, shopping will be easier. Many things will need to be decided before purchasing your bedroom set. Other things to think about before shopping are, the size of mattress, the height of a dresser and how many drawers you would like, and the amount of bedroom furniture to purchase. Most important, how large is your room and will it accommodate the furniture you plan to buy?

Using a tape measure you will want to make a scaled layout of your bedroom on graph paper. Draw in all doorways and windows including the height of windows. Any nooks, built in bookshelves, radiators or other items built in to the bedroom should be noted in the layout. Making a note for all outlets, TV cable, and phone jacks will be helpful in the placement of your new bedroom furniture. Though you can purchase extension cords it is still best to avoid extensions if possible. Not only for safety reasons but to see where extensions may need to be discretely hidden from view.

Once you have chosen your bedroom furniture, you can make scaled cutouts of the furniture to use on your floor plan. Rooms are often designed with a focal point in mind, so take this into consideration when laying out your bedroom floor plan. The bed should be your focal point since it is the largest piece of furniture going into the room. Place your cutout furniture on the graph and move it around till you have a pleasing set up. Remember to leave at least 18 inches for any walkways. Take into consideration the way doors swing open or any often used pathways, such as from the main doorway to the closet or master bath. You will not appreciate having to run an obstacle course in order to get from the doorway to the bath area. Designing the placement of your furniture should help ease the difficulties of furniture placement. It’s much easier to move around paper templates than heavy bedroom furniture.
