Bedroom Dresser

Besides storing your clothing, there are many uses for a bedroom dresser. Some popular ideas for old dressers can be changing that dresser into a dining room hutch, a sofa table, or storage for your linens. When purchasing a new bedroom set which includes a new dresser, don't toss out the old one. If there is no place in your home for it, try using it in the garage for tool storage or to organize holiday linens and smaller items.

Depending on the style, it may be possible to turn your old bedroom dresser into a sofa table. Start by removing all drawers except for the upper most drawers. Now you are left with an ugly wooden face frame. Remove any drawer guides with a screwdriver. Using a jigsaw, remove the frame. From the inside take careful measurements of the bottom and back of the dresser. You will need plywood pieces to fit inside the dresser. Screw the plywood into place and make sure to countersink the screws. Use wood putty to fill the holes. Sanding the new wood may be necessary. Remove the old bedroom dresser hardware and select decorative hardware for the drawers left in the table. Finally, paint or stain your new sofa table. This can add a nice touch to the decor of your living area.

Dining rooms can always use a hutch to store plates, knickknacks, and utensils. Try using your old bedroom dresser as the lower part of your kitchen hutch. Sand any rough edges on the old dresser. You may want to select new hardware for the drawer handles so that it matches the kitchen handles or other items in your dining area. You may decide to purchase a glass door hutch to place on top of your dresser. Matching the type of wood is not as important as matching the style to your dresser, especially if you paint your new hutch. If you do decide to use stain, it is best for you to match wood and grain styles. Change any hardware on the glass door hutch to insure that the pieces appear to belong together. Now paint or stain your new dining room hutch. Don't forget to line the drawers with cloth liners.
